Where is Your Focus? Dear Friend: I walked into the pod and sitting at a desk, with a black eye, was a young man I knew. I asked him what he ran into. He said a fist, but that he had gotten his licks in also. His punishment was “refocus.” He must sit at a desk, not talk to anyone, and not watch TV or play games. He must write papers on what he did, why it was wrong, and what he could do to prevent it in the future along with several other topics. I am not sure how many days he had to do this, but I have seen kids spend a lot of time sitting in “refocus.” I know in my life I must constantly be refocused on what is God’s will for my life. I can easily get caught up in the things of the world going on around me and lose my focus on what is really important. I can easily start worrying about things out of my control. I can start thinking that I’m in control and I know how to do things the right way. And then there are the times when I can simply drift off and get caught up in the things of the flesh. The good thing is God helps me get refocused on him. The problem with the kids we serve is they don’t have the relationship with God to fall back on. Unfortunately, I think most of them simply focus on the situation they are in and stay in that rut. (I've been there myself.) I have seen kids doing this activity off and on for the better part of a year during their sentence. At some point, they start to realize if they want to get out, they had better get focused on what they are supposed to do. However, this punishment doesn’t really seem to be a deterrent for bad behavior. They need to see a positive reason to do what is right. Every week, the volunteers for Youth for Christ are in pods encouraging the kids to learn to focus on what matters, building a relationship with the Lord, sharing how God has changed our lives, and building authentic Christ sharing relationships. Giving them a new reason to do what is right: The Love of God given to them through Jesus. Where has your focus been the last week, month or year? Where is it today? May the Lord be the focus of your life. Blessings, Andrew LaValley Executive Director Southern Colorado Youth for Christ 719-471-0333 office 719-510-9923 cell 2120 Academy Circle, Bldg.
